Ds. W. Pieters: Ambrose wrote a book: "Looking unto Jesus."
Question: True or not?
-------------------------------------
Dear friend W.,
It is impossible to review the work of Ambrose "looking unto Jesus" in a couple remarks. But in short: Isaac Ambrose writes very spiritual and biblical things, but his theology don't stand in the frame work of the Reformation.
For example, Ambrose wrote: "Oh what an error is it, that there's no inherent righteousness in the saints, that there's no grace in the soul of a believer, but only in Christ?" (See attachment, Looking unto Jesus - page 99). Dutch translation: "O! wat is het een dwaling, dat er geen inhangende gerechtigheid is in de ziel van een gelovige, dan slechts Christus."
That is a typical Roman Catholic doctrine. Ambrose identifies ‘Inherent righteousness' with the Spirit living in, but that's wrong and a separation between Christ and the Spirit. Where Christ lives in, there lives the Holy Spirit, but the Spirit is not an inherent righteousness; that is Christ only. ‘Christ for us' that is my righteousness before God and nothing else. Herman F. Kohlbrugge also wrote negative about the doctrine of Isaac Ambrose. But read Ambrose in his context and take your benefits.
Any other questions? At your service in Christ.

Ds. W. Pieters: Jij weet er meer van dan ik, Piet. Maar hoe je ‘inherit righteousness' omschrijft, verschilt nog al. Dat kan heel rooms, maar ook heel protestants worden opgevat, toch?
-------------------------------
Dear friend W., (I thought you want to talk to me in English...?) I don't know anything outside of Christ, because all the knowledge outside of Christ puffs up, but the love of Christ, which is rooted in the Truth, edifies. To the point: You make an error by using the word ‘inherit', because inherit has a total different meaning than the word ‘inherent' which was used by Ambrose.
Again, Ambrose wrote: "Oh, what an error is it, that there's no inherent righteousness in the saints, that there's no grace in the soul of a believer, but only in Christ." For an easy understanding: The Dutch translation of the word 'Inherit' is 'erven'. INHERENT righteousness means in Dutch: ‘eigen-gerechtigheid', of ‘aanklevende gerechtigheid'.
Here, Ambrose has written according to the false doctrine of Rome! Inherent righteousness is just the false doctrine of Rome! (That false doctrine you also can find in the 'Joint declaration on the doctrine of justification' between Rome and the Lutheran World Federation INCLUDING the PKN). So, 'inherent righteousness' is DEADLY QUICKSAND and not a part of the saints' righteousness beside the imputed righteousness of Christ, because the righteousness of Christ is not imparted, but imputed righteousness. Rome teaches the impartation of the righteousness of Christ, but the Reformation teaches -in according to the Scripture- the imputation of the righteousness of Christ (by which the elected sinner is righteous before God). The difference between impartation and imputation is the difference between the pope and Christ.
Which of the two do you want?
blessing,
GPPB. Piet
----------------------------- NOTE: Ds.
